Iris Llewellyn Angle

Then: On January 7, 1993, my twenty-year-old son, Eric, drove into the desert  outside of Phoenix, Az., smoked a cigarette, wrote a note and shot himself.  His pain ended; Mine began.  My pain was unbearable and indescribable. I don't remember much those first few weeks.  I began a journal of letters to Eric to express my sorrow, pain, guilt and anger. With the love and support of family and friends meeting other people who had similar experiences. In writing poetry and journaling, I began to heal.  I read poems that expressed what I could not. I walked.

Now: Today I am still a survivor but I also thrive and love life.  I continue to journal and now write more poetry more about life than death.  I have more laughter than tears.  I am enrolled in a two-year program to become a Certified Poetry Therapist, which uses literature for healing and growth.  I will help others grieve and heal using writing as a healing process.  I will continue to walk.  Two years ago, I was a member of the Northeast Ohio Team-in-Training program to help raise funds and awareness for leukemia.  After walking 26.2 miles in downtown Cleveland, I felt exhilarated and more whole than I had felt in the past eight years.  A few weeks after the marathon, an idea, no a voice whispered in my ear. "It's time for you to walk in memory of your son."  My husband and I have been planning this journey since that day.

Jim Angle

On our adventure, my husband, Jim is in charge of many functions.  He is not walking or biking but is in charge of the itinerary, security, meals, lodging procurement, communications, web site updates, massages and anything else that needs to be done.  He is taking a "working vacation" and is in daily contact with his office via his wireless internet connection.  He experimented with telecommuting one summer when we lived in Southern Pines, NC for two months.  His office claims that things run very smoothly without him.  Imagine that!

Biscuit Angle

We acquired Biscuit on May 31,  2002 from  an internet rescue organization. She is 4 years old, completely house broken, and doesn't chew what she's not supposed to. She is my walking companion and protector. However, when I walk with her, she can only do about two miles.  Thus, she spends most of the time with Jim.  She travels extremely well and loves to stay at motels where she does not have to share a bed with Jim and Iris.  She is perfect for us.  She loves to walk with me and to nap on the couch with Jim .  We are so happy that we found her.
